John Wesley Baker diaries, 1877-1892.

The collection consists of eight diaries written by John Wesley Baker and a newspaper clipping entitled, "Old Time Religion, The Life Work of Rev. Wesley Baker." The diaries, written for the years 1877, 1878, 1879, 1880, 1882, 1885, 1886, and 1892, give a day by day account of his activities and the happenings in the neighborhoods. He speaks of the fluctuations in his health and financial situation as well as his church activities. In the back of each volume is a list of the members of the various churches and some financial information and church statistics. Parts of the diaries are written in shorthand.

John Wesley Baker, Methodist preacher, was born February 13, 1826, in Monroe, Walton County, Georgia, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Harley Baker. He had a limited education. He was licensed to preach by the Protestant Methodist Church when he was about thirty years old. In 1868, the Methodist Episcopal Church, South received him on trial in the traveling connection.
